Kronberg Park Multi-Use Trail Wins APWA National Award.

Milwaukie, Oregon

The Kronberg Multi-Use Trail project recently received the American Public Works Association (APWA) Project of the Year Award. The annual APWA Project of the Year Award promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects, recognizing the importance of engineers and contractors working together to complete initiatives that benefit their communities.

Finalists were selected based on the following main criteria being met:

First, the completion date had to be contained in the contract. The contract called for a one year construction period, and the contractor met that timeline, starting with a groundbreaking in May 2019, completing their work in May 2020.

Second, construction schedule, management, and control techniques used during the project. Priority was given to conforming to regulations and methods designed to protect migratory birds, preservation of large trees, fabrication of structural components while site work was being completed, and communication and coordination between the City and the full project team to complete all work within permit and regulatory controls.

Third, safety performance. The project experienced no substantial lost time due to injuries or incidents. The project team developed several safety plans throughout the duration of the project including tree removal and preservation work, temporary fencing to avoid migratory birds from nesting where construction activities would be underway, and the transport and installation of pre-fabricated structural items.

Fourth, community need. The Kronberg Park Multi-Use Walkway project was first identified as a community need through the Kronberg Park Master Plan in 2014. the Milwaukie community was involved with the alignment and concept planning for the project. The City used social media, flyers and its website to provide construction updates, as well as updates on closures throughout the project.

The realization of the Kronberg Park Multi-Use Walkway involved several considerations to preserve the environment and protect natural resources. Fought & Co. is proud to have been selected to fabricate the steel bridge portion of the Kronberg Park Multi-Use Walkway. It’s unusual for Fought to build a continuous bridge that has so many twists and turns. It’s more common for us to be fabricating linear bridge girders spanning long distances over rivers and highways. The Kronberg Park bridge is a smaller more intimate steel bridge that has special meaning connecting the City of Milwaukie in a new way. This connection provides a safe pathway for walkers, runners, bikers, and nature enthusiasts.
